Co-hosts Canada national football team saw their FIFA World Cup campaign come to an end with a 3-0 defeat to Morocco national football team in the Round of 16, but the team left the tournament having achieved several historic milestones for Canadian football.
Canada’s run included the nation’s first-ever point at a FIFA World Cup and its first victory in the knockout stage, defeating South Africa national football team to reach the last 16.
Defender Alistair Johnston said the players could take pride in what they had accomplished despite the disappointment of their exit.
“I just want to be able to look myself in the mirror after this World Cup and say that I left it all out there,” Johnston said.
“I do think we’ve done that. Even though we’re disappointed here in Houston, we know the kind of cultural impact we’re having back home, and that resonates with us.”
Head coach Jesse Marsch admitted the defeat was difficult to accept, particularly after Canada’s impressive display for much of the match.
“It’s always hard in these moments, especially when you play really well. It’s tough to swallow,” Marsch said.
“I told the players I was proud of them. We’ve shown that we can compete like this against the best teams in the world. Now the challenge is to maintain that standard for the full 90 minutes.”
Marsch said Canada’s performances during the tournament should serve as a foundation for the future, with the aim of building a distinct football identity across all levels of the game.
“We need to continue building the depth of this team, develop our youth national sides and create a real Canadian DNA in the way we play, the infrastructure we build and how we coach the game in our academies,” he said.
Despite the elimination, the coach praised his squad’s commitment and determination throughout the competition.
“In terms of the commitment of the group and making the country proud, they couldn’t have done more,” he added.
Canada dominated large parts of the first half against Morocco and created several promising opportunities but failed to convert their chances. The momentum shifted after the break as Morocco’s quality shone through.
Azzedine Ounahi scored twice in the second half before Soufiane Rahimi added a late third to secure a place in the quarterfinals for the Atlas Lions.
Midfielder Stephen Eustáquio said Canada had every reason to be proud of its campaign despite the defeat.
“I think we had an amazing tournament. Until half-time of this game, we were outstanding. Everybody back home should be very proud. We believed we could win this match because we were creating chances and controlling the game. But we conceded from a set piece, then pushed forward and were punished on the counterattack,” he said.
After the match, Canada shared an emotional message with supporters on social media, acknowledging the disappointment of the defeat while celebrating the bond forged with fans throughout the tournament.
“Right now, the hurt is real. We came here believing we could keep writing history, and the final whistle is not easy to accept,” the team wrote.
The message also reflected on the impact the campaign had made across the country.
“Over the last few weeks, we watched an entire country fall in love with this team. Streets were filled with red. Living rooms became supporters’ sections. We’ve always believed this was a football country. Now, we know it is.”
