Hong Kong is facing growing international scrutiny over its civil liberties and political freedoms following sweeping changes introduced under the National Security Law, according to an article in the Asian News Post.
The law, imposed in 2020, has significantly reshaped the city’s political and legal environment, with authorities using national security provisions against prominent pro-democracy figures and other critics of the government, the article said.
It cited cases involving activists including Joshua Wong, Chow Hang-tung, Lee Cheuk-yan and Albert Ho as examples of the authorities’ approach to dissent. The article said charges including “collusion with foreign forces” and “incitement to subversion” had been used against activists, contributing to concerns among rights groups about the scope of the legislation.
The changes have also affected Hong Kong’s media and civil society. Independent media organisation Apple Daily was forced to shut down, while journalists and other individuals have faced prosecution under national security and sedition-related laws. Several civil society organisations have also closed or dissolved amid the changing legal environment.

It cited Singapore and Tokyo as destinations for companies seeking greater certainty amid concerns over Hong Kong’s political and legal environment.
Hong Kong’s economy has also faced challenges in recent years, including a decline in property prices and weaker foreign investment. The article linked these trends partly to political uncertainty and the departure of skilled professionals from the city.
“The CCP is trading Hong Kong’s prosperity for political dominance, a gamble that could permanently downgrade the city’s global standing,” the article said.
The United States and the United Kingdom have taken measures against Hong Kong officials and changed aspects of their trade and diplomatic policies towards the territory. Human rights organisations have also criticised the application of national security legislation, particularly where they argue that legal provisions have been applied to conduct that took place before the law came into force.
The developments have also renewed debate over the commitments made under the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration, which established the framework for Hong Kong’s return to Chinese sovereignty in 1997 and the principle of maintaining the city’s existing way of life and legal system for 50 years.
Beijing has defended the national security legislation as necessary to protect national security and maintain stability. Chinese authorities have repeatedly rejected accusations that the law is intended to suppress legitimate political activity, arguing that Hong Kong’s rights and freedoms are protected under the legal framework.
The changes have nevertheless transformed Hong Kong’s political landscape and reduced the space for organised opposition and public dissent.
The future of Hong Kong’s role as an international financial and business centre remains closely linked to how its authorities balance national security requirements with the city’s longstanding economic openness and international connections.
