India-Bangladesh Ties Back on Track as FMs Meet

Bangladesh FM Rahman arrived in the Indian capital on Tuesday on what Dhaka described as a “goodwill visit…reports Asian Lite News

Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman in New Delhi on Wednesday, with both sides pledging to deepen bilateral relations amid signs of a diplomatic thaw between the two neighbours.

The talks covered bilateral cooperation, as well as regional and global developments. “Agreed to remain in close touch,” Jaishankar wrote on X following the meeting.

Rahman arrived in the Indian capital on Tuesday on what Dhaka described as a “goodwill visit,” calling it an “important foundation” for elevating cooperation between the two countries to more productive and sustainable levels. He is en route to Mauritius, where he will attend the Indian Ocean Conference scheduled for April 10–12.

During his New Delhi stopover, the Bangladeshi foreign minister is also scheduled to meet India’s National Security Advisor and the Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, according to a statement from the Bangladesh Foreign Ministry.

The visit carries considerable diplomatic weight as the first trip to India by a Bangladeshi minister since the BNP-led government took office in February. It signals a potential reset in relations between the two countries, which had grown strained over the preceding 18 months under the interim government of Muhammad Yunus, a period marked by escalating attacks on Hindu minorities and a surge in anti-India rhetoric.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs struck a warm tone ahead of the visit, noting that the two countries “share warm and historic ties anchored in strong people-to-people relations.”

The diplomatic momentum had already begun building earlier in the week. On Monday, India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Pranay Verma, met Bangladeshi Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in Dhaka, where both sides discussed expanding bilateral engagement across key sectors. Verma conveyed India’s readiness to deepen ties through a “positive, constructive and forward-looking approach” grounded in shared interests and mutual benefit.

Bangladesh Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Advisor Humayun Kabir is accompanying Foreign Minister Rahman on both the India visit and the Mauritius conference.
