Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on Monday held discussions with senior Chinese officials in Beijing on expanding political, people-to-people and institutional exchanges as India and China continue efforts to improve bilateral relations.
According to the Indian Embassy in Beijing, Misri met Hong Liang, Deputy Secretary General of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), and discussed ways to enhance exchanges at the political and people-to-people levels.
“Foreign Secretary Shri Vikram Misri met with H.E. Hong Liang, Deputy Secretary General of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC). They discussed ways to enhance bilateral exchanges at the political and people-to-people levels,” the embassy said in a post on X.
Earlier in the day, Misri began his official visit to China with a meeting with Sun Haiyan, Vice Minister of the International Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China.
The two sides discussed the implementation of the understanding reached by the leaders of both countries to further develop bilateral relations.
“Foreign Secretary Shri Vikram Misri commenced his official visit to China today with a meeting with H.E. Sun Haiyan, Vice Minister of the International Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. They discussed ways to deepen implementation of the guidance of the leaders for bilateral relations, including addressing issues of priority to both sides and by promoting political, people-to-people, academic and think-tank exchanges,” the embassy said.
India’s Ambassador to China, Vikram Doraiswami, also attended the meeting.
The visit comes as New Delhi and Beijing continue efforts to stabilise ties following years of tensions.
Last week, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said India-China relations had been gradually normalising since Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in Kazan in 2024.
Speaking during a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the sidelines of ASEAN meetings in Manila, Jaishankar said India believes a stable and cooperative relationship should be based on mutual respect, mutual interest and mutual sensitivity.
He also called for fair market access and a more balanced trade relationship between the two countries.
