Embassy repatriates first four Indian victims of the deadly Ras Laffan industrial disaster…reports Asian Lite News Desk
The Indian Embassy in Doha on Thursday announced that the mortal remains of four of the 12 Indian nationals who lost their lives in the Ras Laffan Industrial City gas explosion have been repatriated to India, while efforts are underway to bring back the remaining victims.
“The mortal remains of 4 out of 12 Indian nationals who unfortunately passed away in the Ras Laffan incident are being repatriated to India today. We hope to repatriate other mortal remains soon as well. Embassy has kept the families and authorities informed,” the embassy said in a post on X.
The mission also expressed gratitude to the Qatari authorities and Indian community organisations for their support and coordination during the repatriation process. It added that embassy officials have remained in close contact with the injured Indian nationals and are extending all possible assistance.
The deadly incident occurred on Sunday evening at the Barzan local gas supply facility in Ras Laffan Industrial City during a start-up operation.
According to Qatar’s Ministry of Interior, a technical malfunction triggered an explosion and fire, killing 13 people and injuring 66 others. Among the deceased were 12 Indian nationals.
In a separate statement, QatarEnergy confirmed that the explosion occurred during an operational start-up at the facility and said emergency response teams acted swiftly to contain the fire.
Earlier this week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Qatar’s Amir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who conveyed his condolences over the loss of Indian lives in the tragedy.
“I thank His Highness the Amir of Qatar for his phone call and condolences on the loss of lives of Indian nationals in the tragic accident at Ras Laffan Industrial City in Qatar. We both share the grief of the families who have lost their loved ones and pray for the speedy recovery of those injured,” PM Modi said in a post on X.
The Prime Minister also reaffirmed the strong ties between the two countries, stating that India and Qatar remain committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of their citizens and stand in solidarity during this difficult time.
