Four members of an Indian family are shot dead in Georgia as children hide and raise the alarm, with the husband arrested on multiple murder charges.
A family dispute turned into a devastating tragedy for an Indian household in the United States after an Indian woman and three of her relatives were shot dead at their home in Georgia, allegedly by her husband, in an incident that has left both local and overseas communities in shock.
The shooting took place in the early hours of Friday morning at a residence in Lawrenceville, a suburb of Atlanta, when police were called to reports of gunfire shortly after 2:30am. On arrival, officers discovered four adults with fatal gunshot wounds inside the home. The victims were later identified as Meenu Dogra, 43, her husband’s relatives Gourav Kumar, 33, Nidhi Chander, 37, and Harish Chander, 38.
Authorities said three children were inside the house when the violence unfolded. Terrified, they hid in a closet as shots were fired, with one of them managing to dial 911, a call that police believe saved their lives. Officers said the children were not physically injured and have since been taken into the care of a family member.
The suspect, Vijay Kumar, 51, was arrested at the scene and has been charged with multiple serious offences, including four counts of felony murder, four counts of aggravated assault and additional charges related to cruelty to children. Investigators believe the attack stemmed from a domestic dispute, though the full circumstances are still under investigation.
Local authorities described the incident as deeply distressing, particularly given the presence of children in the home, and said specialist teams were working to support those affected. Neighbours reported being woken by police sirens and said the community was struggling to comprehend the scale of the tragedy.
India’s Consulate General in Atlanta confirmed that the suspect had been taken into custody and said it was providing all possible assistance to the bereaved family. In a statement, the consulate expressed profound grief over the deaths and said it was in contact with local authorities to ensure necessary support and legal procedures were followed.
