Indian Navy sail training ship INS Sudarshini has departed Boston in the United States for Ponta Delgada in Portugal’s Azores after participating in the SAIL 250 celebrations and the International Naval Review 250 as part of its ongoing Lokayan 2026 transoceanic expedition.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the ship represented India at the prestigious maritime events, showcasing the country’s rich seafaring heritage while strengthening maritime partnerships through professional and cultural engagements.
The ministry said INS Sudarshini continues to serve as a symbol of India’s maritime capability, professionalism and goodwill as it proceeds to its next port of call in Portugal.
The ship arrived in Boston after taking part in the Sail4th 250 celebrations in New York and participated in the Grand Parade of Sails, which marked the opening of Sail Boston 2026.
India’s Consul General in Boston, Raghuram Sastry, joined INS Sudarshini during the Grand Parade of Sails and its ceremonial entry into Boston Harbour.
Flying the Indian Tricolour, the vessel sailed past landmarks including Castle Island and the Seaport District before berthing at Boston Fish Pier.
INS Sudarshini was among more than 60 tall ships from over 20 countries participating in Sail Boston 2026, representing India as a maritime ambassador of goodwill during the Lokayan 2026 voyage.
The Ministry of Defence said the ship’s participation reflected the Indian Navy’s commitment to maritime diplomacy, international goodwill and cultural exchanges. During its stay in Boston, the vessel was also opened to visitors.
The Boston visit followed earlier port calls at Norfolk, Baltimore and New York, further reinforcing the growing India-US maritime partnership and highlighting India’s maritime traditions on the global stage.
Earlier, the Indian Navy praised the crew and trainees of INS Sudarshini for their participation in the Crew and Cadet City Parade at Sail Boston 2026.
“INS Sudarshini Charms Boston! The crew and trainees of #INSSudarshini marched through the historic streets of #Boston during the Crew & Cadet City Parade at @SailBoston2026, proudly showcasing India’s rich seafaring heritage and maritime traditions. The spirited participation reaffirmed the enduring maritime partnership and the timeless bonds forged across the seas,” the Navy said in a post on X.
The year 2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. As part of the Semiquincentennial celebrations, Sail250 has brought together an international fleet of tall ships and naval vessels at selected US ports, including Norfolk, Baltimore, New York, New Orleans and Boston.
Throughout its US visit, INS Sudarshini hosted dignitaries, members of the Indian diaspora and international naval delegations, reaffirming India’s commitment to maritime cooperation and friendship.
