Iran has suspended its participation in ongoing negotiations in Switzerland involving the United States, Qatar and Pakistan, following what Tehran described as a threatening statement from Washington during the talks.
The announcement was made by Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei, who said the US remarks prompted Iran to withdraw from the four party discussions and refuse further participation under the current circumstances.
According to Iranian media reports, Tehran informed the other participants that it would not continue with the talks, arguing that meaningful negotiations could not proceed while threats were being issued. The Iranian delegation also stressed the importance of ensuring that all parties fulfil their commitments and voiced concerns over what it described as a lack of trust, particularly regarding Israel’s alleged violations of a ceasefire agreement.
The development marks a setback for diplomatic efforts that had continued into the weekend in Switzerland, where US and Iranian officials were engaged in discussions covering Iran’s nuclear programme, regional security issues and maritime stability in the Strait of Hormuz.
The decision came shortly after US President Donald Trump issued a warning to Tehran, demanding that Iran immediately rein in armed groups in Lebanon that Washington considers to be Iranian backed proxies.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump warned that the United States would respond forcefully if such groups continued actions that Washington viewed as destabilising.

Before Iran’s withdrawal, US officials had expressed optimism about the talks. Negotiations continued late into the night at the Burgenstock resort overlooking Lake Lucerne, with American officials describing the discussions as constructive.
US Vice President JD Vance said significant progress had been achieved during the first day of negotiations and voiced confidence that further advances could be made.
A senior US diplomat involved in the discussions later said talks had remained active since Vance’s arrival in Switzerland and covered a range of issues, including Iran’s nuclear activities, security in the Strait of Hormuz and the fragile ceasefire in southern Lebanon.
According to US officials, negotiators also discussed mechanisms aimed at preventing escalation and maintaining stability along the Israel Lebanon border, where tensions involving Hezbollah have threatened wider regional diplomacy.
Iran’s decision to halt participation introduces fresh uncertainty into efforts to ease regional tensions and revive diplomatic engagement between Tehran and Washington amid a volatile security environment in the Middle East.
