Japan has invited citizens of India and Japan to submit logo designs for the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 2027, with the winning design set to become the official emblem for anniversary events.
The Japanese Foreign Ministry has launched a public design contest as part of preparations for the milestone, which will be marked with a series of events aimed at celebrating the longstanding relationship and further strengthening bilateral ties.
“The year 2027 will mark the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and India. A series of events are being planned to commemorate this milestone as well as to deepen the existing positive relationship between the two countries,” the Foreign Ministry said in its press release.
The ministry has called on people in both countries to contribute designs that can represent the anniversary and the future of India-Japan relations.
“Please submit a logo to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and India,” it said.
The contest is open to Indian and Japanese citizens regardless of their age or current place of residence. Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) and Person of Indian Origin (PIO) card holders who are currently residing in Japan are also eligible to participate.
Entries must be submitted by September 15, 2026. Participants are required to send their designs by email to the Southwest Asia Division of the Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau at Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs at [email protected].
The submitted designs will be assessed by officials and other concerned persons, with one winning entry to be selected as the official logo for the 75th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Japan and India.
The winning design is expected to be announced jointly by the Japanese and Indian sides in early December, although the Foreign Ministry said the schedule could be subject to change.
The logo competition is part of wider plans by both governments to mark 75 years of diplomatic relations in 2027. India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has said the two countries will observe the year as the India-Japan Year of Shared Horizons.
The celebrations are expected to include a series of commemorative programmes across both countries, with a particular focus on encouraging participation by young people.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said the two countries had agreed on a list of commemorative outcomes and events for the milestone year.
“Looking ahead to 2027, which marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between our two countries, the two sides have agreed to a list of commemorative outcomes and events with a strong focus on youth to celebrate this milestone in a befitting manner. We will celebrate the year 2027 as the India-Japan Year of Shared Horizons. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has also invited Prime Minister Modi to visit Japan next year for the annual summit, and this annual summit will come in the midst of these celebrations.”
The MEA has said the two countries plan to organise 10 commemorative programmes during 2027, involving stakeholders from both nations and focusing on youth participation.
The week of April 28, 2027, will be designated as India-Japan Week, according to the MEA, with coordinated outreach activities planned to mark the anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.
The anniversary celebrations are intended to highlight the breadth of cooperation between the two countries and provide opportunities for people from India and Japan to participate in activities marking the milestone.
The logo and theme competition is expected to give citizens of both countries an opportunity to contribute directly to the celebrations and reflect their vision for the future of the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.
The two countries established diplomatic relations in 1952, and the 75th anniversary in 2027 is being positioned as an opportunity to further strengthen their relationship through cultural, diplomatic and people-to-people initiatives.
