Kuwait has accused Iran of carrying out a drone attack on Kuwait International Airport, escalating tensions across the Gulf amid an increasingly volatile regional security situation.
In a statement on Wednesday, Kuwait’s Ministry of Defence said several hostile drones targeted Terminal One, the main passenger building at Kuwait International Airport, resulting in significant material damage and injuries to a number of people.
Brigadier General Saud Abdulaziz Al Otaibi, the official spokesperson for the ministry, described the incident as a result of what he called “criminal Iranian aggression”.
According to the ministry, those injured in the attack received medical treatment, while security forces remain on high alert.
Al Otaibi said the armed forces were closely monitoring developments in coordination with relevant authorities and remained fully prepared to respond to any further threats.
“The armed forces are in a state of complete readiness to deal with any developments and take all necessary measures to preserve the security and stability of the country,” he said.
Following the attack, Kuwait suspended air traffic and redirected flights to alternative airports, according to the state news agency KUNA.
The closure of the country’s main international gateway underscored growing concerns over the widening regional conflict and its impact on civilian infrastructure.
The incident came as Iran’s state broadcaster Press TV reported that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) had launched retaliatory attacks against American military assets in the Gulf.
Citing a statement from the IRGC, Press TV said Iranian forces targeted the headquarters of the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain and a regional American airbase with missiles and drones.
The IRGC said the strikes were carried out in response to what it described as two acts of US aggression against Iranian interests.
According to the Iranian statement, an Iranian oil tanker was attacked near the Strait of Hormuz late on Tuesday, while an IRGC communications tower on Qeshm Island was also struck by aerial projectiles.
“In response to this aggression, their air and helicopter base stationed in one of the countries of the region, as well as the headquarters of the US Fifth Fleet, were subjected to missile and drone attacks by the IRGC Aerospace Force,” the statement said.
There was no immediate confirmation from the United States regarding the Iranian claims.
The latest exchange marks a sharp escalation in tensions between Iran and its regional adversaries, raising fears of a broader conflict across the Gulf, a region critical to global energy supplies and international trade.
Security analysts have warned that attacks on military installations and civilian infrastructure could further destabilise the region and increase the risk of direct confrontation involving multiple countries.
