Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday met Rabi Lamichhane, chairman of Nepal’s ruling Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and expressed support for closer cooperation between the two countries to advance a shared and prosperous future.
In a post on X following the meeting, Modi said he welcomed Lamichhane’s desire to deepen engagement with India and reaffirmed New Delhi’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties.
“Delighted to meet the Chairman of the Rastriya Swatantra Party of Nepal, Mr Rabi Lamichhane. I welcome and fully share his desire to work closely together for a shared and prosperous future,” the Prime Minister said.
Modi reiterated that Nepal remains a key partner under India’s Neighbourhood First policy and said New Delhi looked forward to working closely with Kathmandu to further enhance the longstanding relationship between the two neighbours.
“Nepal is a priority partner under our Neighbourhood First policy, and we look forward to collaborating with the new government to elevate the special and multifaceted relationship between our two countries to greater heights,” he added.
Earlier in the day, Lamichhane led a Nepalese delegation in talks with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi.
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Shah congratulated Lamichhane on the RSP’s electoral success and conveyed India’s best wishes to Nepal’s new government.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the traditionally close relationship between India and Nepal and enhancing cooperation across various sectors.
Following the meeting, Lamichhane described the discussions as constructive and said they focused on expanding bilateral cooperation.
“It was a pleasure meeting with India’s Home Minister, Shri Amit Shah Ji, during my visit to New Delhi. We held a constructive dialogue on strengthening the Nepal India relationship, enhancing security cooperation, and fostering greater collaboration between our parties to promote democratic values and mutual interests,” he said.
The Nepalese delegation also met senior Bharatiya Janata Party leaders as part of its engagements in the Indian capital.
During a meeting held under the BJP’s ‘Know BJP’ initiative, party leader Nitin Nabin briefed the delegation on the BJP’s organisational structure, ideological foundations and governance approach under Prime Minister Modi.
Nabin also highlighted the deep historical, cultural and civilisational ties between India and Nepal, describing the relationship as one rooted in shared heritage and strong people to people connections.
The discussions additionally focused on the growing role of younger generations in politics, with both sides exchanging views on youth participation in democratic processes and their influence on public discourse and future leadership.
The meetings underscore continued efforts by India and Nepal to deepen political engagement and reinforce cooperation across a range of strategic, cultural and developmental areas.
