Several people were injured and Kuwait’s main international airport suffered significant damage on Wednesday after what authorities described as an Iranian drone attack on the country’s primary passenger terminal.
In a statement, Kuwait’s Ministry of Defence said a number of hostile drones targeted Terminal One at Kuwait International Airport, causing extensive damage to the building and injuring several individuals.
“The Official Spokesman for the Ministry of Defense, Brigadier General Saud Abdulaziz Al Otaibi, stated that a number of hostile drones targeted today the passenger building (T1) at Kuwait International Airport as a result of the criminal Iranian aggression,” the ministry said.
The statement added that those injured received medical treatment and that the armed forces remained on high alert.
Al Otaibi said the military was coordinating with relevant authorities and stood ready to respond to any further developments.
“He affirmed that the armed forces are monitoring the situation in coordination with the relevant authorities, and they are in a state of complete readiness to deal with any developments, and to take all necessary measures to preserve the security of the country and its stability,” the ministry said.
Kuwaiti health authorities later said 63 people were injured in what the government described as an Iranian attack targeting the country, prompting the activation of emergency response plans and the mobilisation of medical teams nationwide.
Abdullah Al Sanad, spokesperson for the Ministry of Health, said hospitals and emergency services were placed on full alert immediately after the attack.
According to health officials, the casualties included civilians, airport employees and travellers. Victims suffered a range of injuries, including fractures, head wounds, blast related trauma and smoke inhalation. Several emergency surgeries were carried out following the incident.
Following the attack, Kuwait’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation suspended air traffic and diverted flights to alternative airports as emergency response teams assessed the extent of the damage.
DGCA spokesperson Abdullah Al Rajhi said the authority activated its emergency plan after the drone strike on the airport.
According to Kuwait News Agency, all flights were suspended until further notice while authorities conducted inspections and repair work to restore normal operations.
The incident marks a significant escalation in regional tensions and raises fresh concerns about the vulnerability of civilian infrastructure amid the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel.
The latest attack comes against the backdrop of hostilities that erupted following US and Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28, which killed Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several senior military officials.
Iran subsequently launched waves of missile and drone attacks targeting US and Israeli interests, as well as allied facilities across the region.
A ceasefire between Iran, the United States and Israel took effect on April 8 after 40 days of fighting. However, diplomatic efforts to secure a lasting settlement have struggled to make progress.
Iranian and American delegations held talks in Islamabad in April, but negotiations failed to produce an agreement. Since then, both sides have reportedly exchanged proposals aimed at ending the conflict, though no breakthrough has been announced.
The attack on Kuwait International Airport is likely to intensify fears that the fragile ceasefire could unravel and draw additional countries into the regional confrontation.
