Several members of Kuwait’s armed forces were injured and a power generation and water desalination plant was damaged after Iranian attacks on Friday, according to Kuwaiti authorities, marking a sharp escalation in regional tensions.
The Kuwaiti Army said on X that “hostile” drone attacks targeted several military facilities and camps across the country during the morning. It confirmed that a number of armed forces personnel were injured but did not disclose how many were affected or the severity of their injuries.
Separately, Kuwait’s Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy said an Iranian strike hit a power generation and water desalination plant, sparking a fire and causing extensive damage to the facility.
The ministry said firefighting teams had brought the blaze under control, while technical crews were working to repair the damaged units and restore operations. It also appealed to residents to conserve electricity during what it described as an “exceptional period.”
Kuwait’s Foreign Ministry condemned the attacks, describing them as a violation of the country’s sovereignty and international law. It warned that the strikes risked further destabilising the region and reaffirmed Kuwait’s right to protect its national security.
The attacks come despite a peace memorandum of understanding signed by the United States and Iran in mid-June, under which both sides had agreed to hold negotiations within 60 days in an effort to reach a final agreement.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for a series of retaliatory strikes targeting US-linked military assets across the region.
In a statement, the IRGC said it had struck the US special operations command centre at al-Tanf in Syria, American weapons depots and missile launchers in Kuwait, and radar installations in Oman.
The IRGC said the operations formed part of the 11th, 12th and 13th waves of Operation Nasr-2. It added that the 11th wave was dedicated to deceased soldiers from Bampur in Iranshahr and involved what it described as a surprise attack on the US special forces command centre in Syria’s al-Tanf region.
In a separate statement, the IRGC’s Public Relations Department said the first phase of the retaliatory strikes targeted a missile defence surveillance radar, several US weapons depots, two HIMARS launchers and multiple missiles. It also claimed the attacks triggered a large fire at a base hosting US forces in Kuwait.
The claims made by the IRGC have not been independently verified, and there has been no immediate response from the United States regarding the reported strikes.
The latest developments underscore growing instability across the region as military exchanges continue despite recent diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions between Washington and Tehran.
