More than 30,000 people gathered at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium on Thursday for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address to the Indian community, making it one of the largest gatherings for a world leader in Australia.
The event, titled “Melbourne Meets Modi”, drew members of the Indian-Australian community from across the country, with the stadium resonating with chants of “Modi, Modi” and “Bharat Mata ki Jai” as they awaited the Prime Minister’s arrival.
The venue was filled with cultural performances, music and entertainment, creating a festive atmosphere ahead of PM Modi’s address. Indian tricolours and Australian flags were displayed across the stadium, reflecting the close people-to-people ties between the two countries.
Members of the Indian diaspora expressed excitement at being part of the event, describing it as a memorable occasion.
“Literally going to be history in the making right here in the heart of Melbourne,” one member of the Indian community said.
“I am very, very excited today, and I cannot wait to see Modi ji. Melbourne meets Modi,” another attendee said.
A third member of the diaspora said, “I’m a huge fan of Narendra Modi ji. He’s the man behind the incredible India today, who shaped India in many ways and made great decisions for an incredible India today.”
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi received a warm welcome from members of the Indian community upon his arrival in Melbourne as he began the Australia leg of his three-nation visit.
Despite the cold weather, large numbers of people gathered to greet the Prime Minister, with chants of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and “Modi, Modi” ringing out during the welcome.
Responding to the reception, PM Modi thanked the Indian community for their affection and described the welcome as unforgettable.
“The weather in Melbourne may be cold but the warmth of the welcome from the Indian community was truly unforgettable. Their affection and unwavering bond with India continue to be a source of immense joy and pride,” the Prime Minister posted on X.
The large turnout at the community event highlighted the enthusiasm of the Indian diaspora and underscored the growing engagement between India and Australia through strong community links.
