Modi Gets Grand Diaspora Welcome in Hague

PM Modi receives vibrant diaspora welcome in The Hague, blending cultural outreach with strategic talks as Netherlands visit focuses on trade, technology and deepening India-Europe ties, reports Asian Lite Newsdesk

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was welcomed with cultural performances and an enthusiastic reception by the Indian diaspora in The Hague, as he began the second leg of his five-nation tour with a visit to the Netherlands.

Arriving in Amsterdam earlier in the day, Modi was received by senior Dutch officials including Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen, before travelling to The Hague where members of the Indian community gathered to greet him. At his hotel, the prime minister interacted with diaspora members and watched a series of cultural and classical performances organised in his honour.

Artists who performed said the experience was a moment of pride, with traditional dances such as Garba forming part of the welcome. Performers described the interaction with the prime minister as memorable, highlighting the emotional connect often seen during Modi’s overseas engagements with Indian communities.

In a post on social media, Modi said the visit comes at a time of growing economic engagement between India and Europe, particularly following momentum around the India–EU Free Trade Agreement. He said the trip would focus on strengthening cooperation in key sectors including semiconductors, water management and clean energy.

During his stay, the prime minister is scheduled to hold talks with Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten and call on King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima. He is also expected to address the Indian diaspora as part of official engagements in the country.

The Netherlands visit follows Modi’s stop in the UAE, where he met President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and reaffirmed India’s support for Abu Dhabi amid regional tensions. The prime minister described the UAE as his “second home” and thanked the leadership for its support to the Indian community.

Modi’s broader tour, running from May 15 to 20, is aimed at strengthening India’s diplomatic, economic and strategic ties across regions, with a focus on trade, investment and technology partnerships.
