Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the 3rd India Nordic Summit in Oslo on Tuesday, with discussions set to focus on expanding cooperation between India and the Nordic nations in areas including technology, renewable energy, defence, sustainability and trade.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the summit will bring together Prime Minister Modi and the leaders of the five Nordic countries, including Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, Icelandic Prime Minister Kristrun Frostadottir and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.
The MEA said the summit would build on the outcomes of the earlier India Nordic Summits held in Stockholm in 2018 and Copenhagen in 2022, while adding greater strategic depth to India’s engagement with the Nordic region. Discussions are expected to centre on innovation, green transition, renewable energy, the blue economy, defence cooperation, space collaboration and Arctic affairs.
Ahead of the summit, Prime Minister Modi on Monday attended the India Norway Business and Research Summit in Oslo, where he highlighted the growing momentum in bilateral economic ties following the implementation of the India EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement.
The event brought together more than 250 participants, including CEOs of over 50 companies from India and Norway, alongside representatives from business and research sectors. Several agreements between Indian and Norwegian organisations were also signed during the summit.
Prime Minister Modi arrived in Norway on Monday as part of the fourth leg of his five nation tour. In a special gesture, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre personally received him at the airport. Norway’s Ambassador to India, May-Elin Stener, India’s Ambassador to Norway, Gloria Gangte, and senior officials were also present to welcome the Prime Minister.
During the visit, Modi also met Harald V at the Royal Palace in Oslo. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the two leaders discussed expanding cooperation between Indian and Norwegian companies, particularly in emerging technologies and innovation driven sectors.
The PMO said Prime Minister Modi appreciated Norway’s natural beauty and underlined that the long standing friendship between the two countries continued to grow stronger through shared democratic values, rule of law and people centric governance.
King Harald later hosted a luncheon in honour of Prime Minister Modi, who thanked the Norwegian monarch and the people of Norway for the warm hospitality extended during the visit.
Earlier in the day, Modi was conferred with Norway’s highest civilian honour for foreign Heads of Government, the Grand Cross of the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit.
“Honoured to receive the Grand Cross of the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit. This honour is dedicated to the people of India and is a tribute to the enduring friendship between India and Norway. It reflects our shared commitment to global progress,” the Prime Minister said after receiving the award.
The Prime Minister also expressed gratitude to King Harald and the people of Norway for the recognition. According to the PMO, the award is presented in recognition of outstanding service in the interests of Norway and humanity.
