Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian will travel to New Delhi to attend the upcoming BRICS Summit in September, Iranian sources said on Friday.
Pezeshkian’s participation comes as India prepares to host the 18th BRICS Summit under its 2026 chairship. The summit will be held under India’s theme, “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability”.
India assumed the BRICS chairship from Brazil at the beginning of 2026. Pezeshkian’s planned visit is expected to provide an opportunity for discussions on bilateral ties as well as regional and international developments.
Pezeshkian met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in October 2024 on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia. The two leaders discussed bilateral relations and regional issues during the meeting.
Iran became a full member of BRICS in 2024 along with Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates. Indonesia joined the grouping in 2025, taking the number of full members to 11.
Iran has also stepped up its engagement with India through the BRICS framework. In June, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi visited New Delhi to attend the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.
Speaking to reporters in the national capital after the meeting, Araghchi described India as an increasingly influential global peacemaker and said New Delhi could play a “greater role” in efforts to de-escalate tensions in West Asia.
Araghchi said Tehran did not see a future in armed conflict and maintained that there was no military solution to the crisis. He said a “negotiated settlement” remained the only viable path forward.
Underscoring Iran’s willingness to engage with India, Araghchi said, “We will welcome any constructive role by India.”
During his visit, Araghchi also held talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, with discussions covering regional developments and commercial security.
In a post on X, Araghchi said: “In fruitful engagement with my host External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, discussed regional developments and clarified that Iran will always carry out historical duty as protector of security in Hormuz. Iran is a reliable partner of all friendly nations, who can rely on safety of commerce.”
The Iranian government also highlighted Araghchi’s participation in the BRICS ministerial meeting, saying he had stressed the importance of challenging Western hegemony and ensuring that international institutions remained free from political manipulation.
Pezeshkian’s planned India visit comes against the backdrop of heightened tensions in West Asia and ongoing hostilities involving Iran, Israel and the United States. The regional situation has added urgency to diplomatic efforts aimed at preventing further escalation.
For India, the BRICS Summit will provide a platform to engage with Iran alongside other member states on issues ranging from global governance and economic cooperation to regional stability and international security.
The summit is also expected to underline India’s priorities during its 2026 BRICS chairship, with resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability forming the central themes of its agenda.
