‘Students Will Not Back Off’: Rahul Gandhi Warns Government

Rahul Gandhi backs protesting students, demanding the Education Minister’s dismissal, accountability for police action and an apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, reports Asian Lite News Desk

Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Saturday threw his weight behind students protesting against alleged paper leaks and examination irregularities, declaring that their demands were “non-negotiable” and insisting they would not abandon their agitation despite detentions or threats.

After meeting students observing a hunger strike at Jantar Mantar, Gandhi said the protesters had placed three key demands before the government: the dismissal of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, action against those responsible for the alleged police crackdown on demonstrators, and an apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Gandhi accused Pradhan of failing to protect the country’s education system and said transferring him to another ministry would not address students’ concerns.

“There are three non-negotiable demands. First, the Education Minister… has to be sacked,” Gandhi said, adding that Pradhan had become “a symbol of corruption” and the destruction of students’ futures.

He rejected reports that the minister could be shifted to another portfolio, saying only his removal from the Cabinet would satisfy the protesters.

The Congress leader also condemned the police response to demonstrations over the alleged examination irregularities, claiming many students had suffered injuries during protests.

“There are thousands and thousands of youngsters who have had lathis break their heads and legs; pellets in their bodies. The organisers and implementors need to be punished and made accountable,” he said.

Gandhi further called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to apologise to students, alleging that the government’s handling of the issue had damaged the future of young people across the country.

He also criticised notices issued by several Delhi universities, including Delhi University and Jawaharlal Nehru University, advising students against participating in the protests.

Gandhi claimed the authorities were attempting to discourage the movement and urged students not to be intimidated by administrative action or threats.

“I told them, do not worry… Do whatever you want; detain, threaten, but we will not back off. They are the future of India,” he said.

Student protests over alleged paper leaks and examination irregularities have continued in recent weeks, with opposition parties accusing the government of failing to safeguard the integrity of competitive examinations. The government has defended its handling of the issue and maintained that measures are being taken to strengthen the examination system.
