WHCA Defends Press Freedom As Trump Attends Correspondents’ Dinner

White House Correspondents’ Association tells President Donald Trump that criticism of journalists is legitimate but defending press freedom remains essential to American democracy, reports Asian Lite News Desk

The White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) delivered a robust defence of press freedom at its annual dinner, with outgoing president Weijia Jiang telling President Donald Trump that while criticism of the media is legitimate, attempts to undermine a free press threaten one of America’s fundamental democratic principles.

Addressing the rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Friday, Jiang described the relationship between presidents and journalists as one defined by the US Constitution and the First Amendment.

She told Trump that disagreement between the White House and the press was an essential part of democracy.

“There is a difference, though, an existential difference between criticizing the press and trying to undermine it,” Jiang said.

“One is healthy, and it makes all of us better. The other is exactly what the founders hoped to prevent.”

Speaking directly to the President, Jiang said the exchange between politicians and journalists was built on accountability.

“When we ask questions, you push back. You give us answers, and we push back. You have always been a deal guy. Well, that’s the deal. The First Amendment is a done deal.”

The annual dinner, which primarily raises scholarship funds for aspiring journalists, was held three months after an armed attack forced organisers to postpone the original event.

Reflecting on the shooting, Jiang said the attack had strengthened rather than weakened the resolve of journalists.

She recalled how reporters, photographers and television crews continued gathering and reporting information during the emergency, while also observing Trump and senior officials working to assess the unfolding situation.

“I got a rare glimpse of something few of us ever see in real time,” she said, adding that both government officials and journalists shared a responsibility to provide the public with accurate information during moments of crisis.

Jiang also described the attempted assassination of Trump in April as “a sobering reminder that democracy is not immune to violence” and warned that democratic freedoms should never be taken for granted.

Incoming WHCA President Jackie Heinrich reaffirmed the association’s commitment to independent journalism, saying reporters would continue pursuing facts “without fear or favour.”

She thanked Trump for attending the event and recognising the role of a free press in American democracy.

The evening also honoured Secret Service officer Victor Gonzalez, who was wounded while confronting the gunman during the April attack, along with journalists and photographers recognised for outstanding reporting.

In his remarks, Trump praised the Secret Service, condemned political violence and acknowledged that tensions between presidents and the media were part of public life. He also criticised sections of the news media while joking with reporters throughout his speech.

Founded in 1914, the White House Correspondents’ Association represents journalists covering the US presidency and has long used its annual dinner to celebrate press freedom, honour journalism and support scholarships for future reporters.
