Members of the Regional Tibetan Youth Congress (RTYC) held a peaceful rally in Gangtok on Saturday as part of a global series of demonstrations led by the Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC), protesting China’s ‘Ethnic Unity Law’ and raising concerns over the situation in Tibet.
The demonstration in Sikkim’s capital brought together RTYC members and local supporters, who raised slogans and carried messages expressing concerns over what organisers described as growing political and cultural repression in Tibet.
The protesters also paid tribute to Martyr Lobga Rangzen, who, according to the organisers, self-immolated in front of the United Nations Headquarters to draw international attention to the situation in Tibet.
Remembering Rangzen’s sacrifice, participants reiterated their demands for justice, freedom and greater international attention to issues affecting Tibetans.
During the rally, protesters criticised China’s ‘Ethnic Unity Law’, alleging that the legislation could accelerate the assimilation of ethnic communities living under Chinese rule.
They claimed that such policies could threaten the preservation of Tibetans’ distinct national identity, language, religious practices and cultural heritage.
The RTYC members called on the international community, particularly the United Nations, to pay greater attention to what they described as a continuing human rights crisis in Tibet.
They also called for accountability over alleged political repression and demanded the release of political prisoners.
The protesters reiterated their call for the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms for Tibetans, while urging governments and international organisations to continue monitoring developments in Tibet.
The Gangtok demonstration formed part of a wider series of protests organised by Tibetan groups in different parts of the world.
The campaign is aimed at drawing international attention to concerns over China’s policies in Tibet and seeking greater support for the Tibetan cause.
Organisers said the peaceful nature of the Gangtok rally reflected their commitment to raising awareness through democratic and non-violent means.
Participants said the global movement for justice, freedom and the protection of Tibetan identity remained united, while urging the international community to continue supporting efforts to safeguard Tibet’s cultural and political rights.
The protesters also used the demonstration to highlight their concerns about the impact of policies they say could weaken Tibet’s cultural identity and traditions.
The RTYC called for continued international engagement on issues relating to Tibet, including what it described as restrictions on political freedoms and cultural expression.
The group said greater international attention was needed to ensure that concerns raised by Tibetans were not overlooked.
The rally in Gangtok comes as Tibetan groups continue to organise demonstrations in different countries and cities, seeking to keep the situation in Tibet on the international agenda.
The protesters maintained that peaceful public demonstrations remained an important way of expressing their concerns and seeking support for their demands.
The participants concluded the rally by reiterating calls for justice, freedom and the protection of Tibetan identity, while urging international organisations and governments to maintain their focus on developments in Tibet.
