US President Donald Trump has announced that Chinese President Xi Jinping will visit the United States on September 24, saying he expects the meeting to bring “a lot of good things” as the two leaders navigate increasingly complex ties between the world’s two largest economies.
Trump revealed the date on Wednesday while meeting US travel industry executives, where he discussed foreign investment, artificial intelligence and economic competition with China.
“By the way, we have the president of China coming on the 24th, it’ll be very exciting, be great, love to have him,” Trump said.
“We have a lot of good things to… with President Xi,” he added, without providing further details about the agenda for the visit.
Earlier in the day, Trump had told reporters at the Oval Office that Xi was planning to travel to the United States, but did not initially give a date.
The planned meeting comes at a significant moment in US-China relations, with Washington and Beijing continuing to compete over trade, artificial intelligence, semiconductors and other strategically important technologies.
Trump used his meeting with business leaders to highlight what he described as America’s growing economic strength and claimed the United States was significantly ahead of China in artificial intelligence.
“AI is going up, and we’re leading China in AI very substantially,” he said.
Competition with Beijing over advanced technology, manufacturing and economic influence has remained a central feature of Trump’s economic and national security agenda. Despite tensions, the two leaders have maintained direct engagement as both countries seek to manage disputes over trade and geopolitical influence.
Trump also made a surprising comparison while discussing relations with neighbouring Canada, suggesting Ottawa had become more difficult for Washington to deal with than Beijing.
“I have China coming here, a lot of people say, who’s the toughest one to deal with?” Trump said. “I said no, actually it’s Canada.”
