US President Donald Trump has intensified his rhetoric against Muslim communities and Democratic candidates from those communities ahead of the midterm elections, with his latest social media post targeting Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed.
Trump shared an image on Truth Social showing El-Sayed standing before a crowd that included women wearing hijabs. Text placed above the image read: “They are coming for your home and your belongings.”
The post came two days after Trump shared another image on Truth Social featuring himself and first lady Melania Trump alongside an image of El-Sayed and his wife. The text above the two images read: “Two VERY DIFFERENT America’s.”
Trump’s latest attack followed El-Sayed’s victory in the Democratic primary for the US Senate in Michigan. El-Sayed defeated establishment-backed Representative Haley Stevens in a closely watched contest, marking a significant victory for the Democratic Party’s progressive wing.
Trump had earlier criticised Democratic candidates during remarks to reporters while signing an executive order concerning the spacing of childhood vaccines.
“One thing is we have jihadists being elected all over the place. We have this, whether it’s communism or jihadism,” Trump said, referring to Democratic primary candidates.
He also criticised their policy proposals, describing them as “radicalism” and “craziness” and calling some of their suggestions “stupidity”.
Trump said people had advised him to use the term “jihadist” when referring to some candidates and questioned whether their political views represented how Americans wanted to live.
He also escalated his criticism of people of Somali descent, claiming they were “not smart” and lacked aptitude, while accusing them of attempting to tell Americans how to run the country.
Trump initially did not identify a specific candidate when making the remarks, but later singled out El-Sayed in his Truth Social post.
El-Sayed’s primary victory has drawn attention within the Democratic Party, with his campaign representing a strong showing for its progressive wing.
His victory over Stevens, who had backing from the party establishment, has positioned him as a prominent progressive candidate ahead of the Senate election.
Trump’s comments and social media posts have added a new dimension to the political contest, with the President focusing his criticism on Muslim and immigrant communities as the parties prepare for the midterm elections.
