US President Donald Trump has indicated that recent American military operations have altered Iran’s political landscape, claiming a new leadership group has emerged in Tehran and is showing a greater willingness to negotiate with Washington over its nuclear programme.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump argued that military pressure had significantly reshaped Iran’s leadership structure and opened the door to a potential breakthrough in long running negotiations over the country’s nuclear ambitions.
“It’s a regime change, because I find these people to be much more rational than the people that are no longer with us,” Trump said.
The President suggested that officials currently involved in discussions with the United States differ markedly from those who previously shaped Iranian policy.
According to Trump, recent military operations had weakened the country’s leadership ranks and created an opportunity for a fresh approach to negotiations.
“We knocked out the first team of leadership, the second team of leadership,” he said. “There’s a different group, there’s a different level and I think it’s frankly a smarter level, and it’s a level that has reason.”
Trump said the current Iranian leadership had approved the framework of a proposed agreement and was committed to completing the process.
“They’ve all approved the deal. Everybody’s approved the deal,” he stated.
The President maintained that recent military pressure had played a key role in bringing Tehran closer to an agreement.
“They’ve taken a pounding,” Trump said. “They want to make the deal a lot more than I do.”
He also painted a bleak picture of Iran’s military capabilities following the conflict, claiming significant damage had been inflicted on the country’s armed forces.
“Their navy is gone, their air force is gone, their anti aircraft is gone, everything’s gone,” Trump said.
Despite those assertions, Trump stressed that he now viewed the current Iranian leadership as more pragmatic and prepared to engage constructively with the United States.
“We found them to be rational and they’re going to make a deal,” he said.
Throughout his remarks, Trump reiterated that preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon remained the central objective of the negotiations.
“They will not purchase, develop in any way, shape or form a nuclear weapon. They will not have a nuclear weapon,” the President said.
Trump described the proposed arrangement as a “very strong memorandum of understanding” and suggested that a formal agreement could be signed in the coming days.
“It’s something that’s going to get done,” he said.
The President also argued that a successful deal could provide Iran with an opportunity to focus on reconstruction and economic recovery.
“They’ve got a chance to build a country,” Trump said.
The comments are likely to attract significant attention because successive US administrations have generally avoided openly advocating regime change as a policy objective towards Iran. Trump’s remarks appeared to draw a direct connection between recent military operations and political changes inside the country.
While details of the proposed agreement have not been publicly released, Trump’s comments signal growing confidence within the administration that negotiations with Tehran are progressing towards a conclusion aimed at permanently restricting Iran’s ability to develop nuclear weapons.
