Trump unveils interim Air Force One aircraft as US upgrades ageing fleet, highlighting enhanced security, communications and capability while permanent next-generation presidential jet programme continues, reports Asian Lite News Desk
United States President Donald Trump has unveiled a new presidential aircraft designed to serve as an interim replacement for the ageing Air Force One fleet, calling it a powerful symbol of American strength and modern capability.
Speaking at Joint Base Andrews, Mr Trump introduced the newly modified Boeing 747, known as the VC-25B Bridge aircraft, which will operate as a temporary presidential jet while the long-delayed next-generation Air Force One programme is completed.
The aircraft has already arrived at the Presidential Airlift Group and begun a series of commissioning flights aimed at validating its operational readiness before formally entering service.
Mr Trump said the current presidential aircraft, in service for more than three decades, had reached the end of their lifecycle. He described the new jet as significantly larger and better suited to represent the United States on the global stage.
Senior defence officials emphasised that the aircraft has undergone extensive modifications focused on security, safety and communications. Troy Meink said ensuring the safety of the commander-in-chief remained the highest priority, while Ken Wilsbach described the programme as a demonstration of the military’s ability to deliver a secure airborne command platform on an accelerated timeline.
The conversion of the aircraft was completed in around ten months, with the President praising the work of military personnel and contractors involved in the process.
Mr Trump also acknowledged the role of Qatar in making the aircraft available, noting that it helped address delays in the primary Air Force One replacement programme.
Officials said the aircraft features advanced secure communications systems, allowing it to function as a fully equipped airborne command centre. Reports from a brief media tour described a spacious interior with conference areas, upgraded seating and enhanced operational facilities designed to support presidential duties during travel.
The President highlighted the aircraft’s extended range and multiple communication systems, saying it would ensure continuity of command even during emergencies.
Looking ahead, Mr Trump said the aircraft is expected to play a prominent role in upcoming national events, including flyovers during the United States’ 250th anniversary celebrations and Independence Day commemorations.
The existing VC-25A aircraft, which entered service under President George H.W. Bush, have carried successive US presidents for decades and may eventually be retired to museums due to their historical significance.
