Two vessels belonging to the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) were attacked while transiting the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday evening, according to local authorities and media reports.
The attacks took place as the vessels were passing through the strategically important waterway, which is a major international maritime route. The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the incidents and called on Iran to immediately halt attacks on commercial shipping.
In a statement posted on social media, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) described the incident as a serious violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2817, which affirmed the importance of freedom of navigation and rejected the targeting of commercial vessels or the obstruction of international maritime routes.
“The UAE further stressed the need for Iran to halt these unprovoked attacks, ensure its full commitment to an immediate cessation of all hostilities, and the complete and unconditional reopening of the Strait of Hormuz in order to safeguard regional security…” the Ministry added.
The UAE Ministry also accused Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of using attacks on commercial shipping and the Strait of Hormuz as a means of economic coercion and blackmail.
It said targeting commercial vessels posed a direct threat to regional stability, the safety of people in the region and global energy security.
The incident comes amid heightened concerns over maritime security and the safety of commercial vessels using the Strait of Hormuz. The waterway is a critical route for international shipping and energy supplies, making any disruption potentially significant for regional and global markets.
ADNOC confirmed that no injuries had been reported following the attacks and said the situation had been brought under control, Xinhua reported, quoting the official Emirates News Agency.
In its statement, ADNOC stressed the importance of protecting the safety and well-being of seafarers, while also safeguarding freedom of navigation and maritime security.
The company did not provide further details about the vessels involved or specify the extent of any damage caused in the incident.
The UAE government’s statement called for Iran to cease what it described as unprovoked attacks and comply with an immediate cessation of hostilities. It also called for the Strait of Hormuz to be fully and unconditionally reopened.
The Strait of Hormuz is a key maritime passage connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the wider Arabian Sea. Its security has long been closely linked to regional stability and the movement of energy supplies.
