Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Yamahi, Speaker of the Arab Parliament, has condemned remarks attributed to the United States Ambassador to Israel referring to the “acceptability” of Israel’s control over the Middle East and Arab territories, describing them as a dangerous deviation from international law and the Charter of the United Nations, and as an incitement to entrench occupation and legitimise policies of annexation by force.
In a statement issued, Al Yamahi stressed that any talk of control over the occupied Palestinian territories constitutes a flagrant violation of international legitimacy and undermines the Palestinian people’s right to establish their independent state with Al Quds as its capital.
He called on the US Administration to clarify its position and rectify these statements, affirming that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states are a red line, and that any political cover for occupation and settlement activities is wholly unacceptable.
The Arab League, Egypt,Jordan and Saudi Arabia, condemned the remarks by the U.S. Ambassador.
Huckabee’s remarks, being illogical and irrational, are “inconsistent with the fundamental principles and established norms of diplomacy,” Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul-Gheit said in a statement.
Those remarks “serve only to inflame sentiments and stir religious and national emotions” when countries are exploring ways to implement the Gaza ceasefire and “seize the opportunity to launch a serious political process towards peace,” he said.
Meanwhile, Egyptian Foreign Ministry on Saturday expressed its “astonishment” over the remarks, describing them as a “blatant violation” of international law and the United Nations Charter.
In a statement, the ministry reaffirmed Egypt’s long-standing position that Israel holds “no sovereignty” over occupied Palestinian territory or any other Arab lands, voicing its “categorical rejection” of any attempts to annex the West Bank or separate it from the Gaza Strip.
Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud also condemned Huckabee’s comments on Saturday, saying such statements set a dangerous precedent and reflect a disregard for the relations between the countries of the region and the United States.
“This extremist rhetoric portends grave consequences and threatens international peace and security by antagonizing the countries and peoples of the region and undermining the foundations of the international order,” the minister said on X.
In a contentious interview with podcaster Tucker Carlson posted on Friday, Huckabee said Israel has a “biblical right” to claim control over the entire Middle East, or at least most of the region.
“It would be fine if they took it all,” Huckabee said.
Jordan’s Foreign Ministry said the remarks are “reckless and provocative.”
Huckabee’s remarks violate diplomatic norms, infringe on the sovereignty of regional states, and breach international law and the UN Charter, Jordan’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Fouad Majali said in a statement, adding that they contradict Washington’s declared position rejecting the annexation of the occupied West Bank.
Majali reaffirmed that the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip are occupied Palestinian territories under international law, reiterating that ending the occupation and establishing an independent Palestinian state, based on the two-state solution and international law, is the only path to a just and comprehensive peace.
