Tushar Kumar becomes youngest Indian-origin mayor in UK history at 23, pledging community-focused leadership and inspiring greater youth participation in public life and local democracy, Rahul Laud reports
Councillor Tushar Kumar has been elected Mayor of Elstree and Borehamwood, becoming the youngest Indian-origin mayor in UK history at the age of 23.
The appointment was confirmed during the Council’s Mayor Making Ceremony held at Fairway Hall in Borehamwood, attended by councillors, faith leaders, civic leaders, community organisations, residents, family and friends. Cllr Linda Smith was appointed as Deputy Mayor for the forthcoming civic year.
In his acceptance speech, Mayor Tushar Kumar reflected on first being elected as a councillor at the age of 20 while studying Political Science at King’s College London. He spoke about the honour of becoming Mayor at such a young age and said he hoped it would inspire more young people to become involved in local democracy, community work, and public service.
Mayor Kumar said: “It is the greatest privilege and honour of my life to serve Elstree & Borehamwood as Mayor. I hope my appointment sends a positive message to young people that age should never be a barrier to making a difference in your community.”
Mayor Kumar also thanked outgoing Mayor, Cllr Dan Ozarow, for his dedicated service to the town over the past year and praised his commitment to supporting residents and community causes.
During the evening, Mayor Kumar paid tribute to his mother, Cllr Parveen Rani, describing her as one of his greatest inspirations. Cllr Parveen Rani previously served as Deputy Mayor of Hertsmere and currently serves as the Global Envoy for Film and Television. He thanked his family and friends for their continued encouragement and support throughout his journey in public life.
Mayor Kumar also spoke about the importance of supporting local charities, volunteers, and community organisations that make a difference across Elstree & Borehamwood every day. He announced WD6 Food Support as his chosen charity for the year.
Speaking about his priorities for the year ahead, Mayor Kumar said he wanted to be “a Mayor who is present for the community” and who stands alongside residents and local organisations.
Her Grace Visakha Dasi, President of ISKCON Bhaktivedanta Manor, was announced as the Mayor’s Chaplain for the year and offered a prayer during the proceedings.
