The Prime Minister welcomed Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to Downing Street, where both leaders reaffirmed the longstanding ties between the United Kingdom and Nigeria, rooted in shared Commonwealth values and deep connections across communities, families and businesses.
They agreed to strengthen cooperation on trade, infrastructure and sustainable growth, with the Prime Minister highlighting the growing presence of Nigerian companies in the UK as a sign of Nigeria’s expanding role in innovation and investment.
A key outcome of the meeting was an agreement to support the redevelopment of two major Nigerian trading ports. Under the deal, British Steel will supply 120,000 tonnes of steel billets to construction firms Hitech Nigeria and ITB Nigeria, a move expected to bolster infrastructure in Nigeria while supporting jobs in the UK.
Both leaders also expressed concern over the worsening situation in Sudan, with the Prime Minister outlining ongoing UK efforts to deliver humanitarian assistance to civilians affected by the crisis.
On defence and security, they pledged closer collaboration to tackle transnational crime and terrorism. Discussions on migration focused on improving procedures related to returns, signalling a shared commitment to more effective coordination in this area.
