General Gwyn Jenkins has been appointed as the new National Security Adviser, replacing Sir Tim Barrow, who took up the role in September 2022, a UK govt press release stated.

General Gwyn Jenkins has a distinguished career in both the military and the heart of government, and has held a number of senior positions, including Deputy National Security Adviser.

He will take up his new role in the summer. He expressed his honor in being appointed to this key position, and his excitement to return to the Cabinet Office at a critical time for our national security. He also mentioned the significant progress made through the National Security Council in organizing, preparing for, and responding to threats.

Finally, he expressed his eagerness to play his part and work with colleagues across the government to further adapt this approach, striving to keep our nation and way of life safe in these difficult times.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said, “General Jenkins has led a distinguished career in both the military and the heart of Government. I know he will make an exceptional contribution to this important role – promoting the UK’s interests and protecting our national security around the world. I would also like to thank Sir Tim Barrow for his expertise over the past few years, particularly his dedicated service to the UK’s unwavering support to Ukraine.”

The Cabinet Secretary, Simon Case, said, “I am delighted Gwyn Jenkins has been appointed as the new National Security Adviser. Gwyn brings a wealth of experience from both his distinguished career in the military and from his time spent working at the heart of government, including as Deputy National Security Adviser. This experience makes him excellently placed to lead the UK’s national security system and represent our interests overseas in these challenging times for global security. I would also like to thank Tim Barrow for his contribution as National Security Adviser since September 2022. I am grateful to Tim for his leadership of our national security community during this vital time for the UK and our international allies.

Commenting on his appointment, General Jenkins said, “I am honoured to be appointed to this key position, and return to the Cabinet Office at a critical time for our national security. I previously saw as deputy National Security adviser the significant progress we’ve made through the National Security Council in how we organise, prepare for and respond to threats. I look forward to playing my part and working with colleagues across government as we further adapt this approach, striving to keep our nation and way of life safe in these difficult times.”
