Key Features of the Sonamarg Tunnel

  • Length: 12 km, including the 6.4 km main tunnel.
  • Altitude: Over 8,650 feet above sea level.
  • Cost: Constructed at ₹2,700 crore.
  • Benefits: Provides year-round access, bypassing landslide-prone areas, and enhancing NH-1 connectivity between Srinagar and Ladakh.
  • Tourism Boost: Facilitates winter tourism and adventure sports, transforming Sonamarg into a year-round destination.

The Sonamarg Tunnel, along with the upcoming Zojila Tunnel (set for completion by 2028), will reduce travel distances from 49 km to 43 km and increase vehicle speeds from 30 km/hr to 70 km/hr.
