Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday became India’s longest continuously serving elected Prime Minister, completing 4,399 consecutive days in office and surpassing the previous record held by the country’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.
The milestone marks more than 12 years since Modi first assumed office on May 26, 2014, following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s victory in the general election. He was subsequently re elected with a larger mandate in 2019 and returned for a third consecutive term after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
With the achievement, Modi has become the longest serving elected Prime Minister in India’s history in a single uninterrupted tenure. While Nehru served as Prime Minister from 1947 until his death in 1964, his tenure began before India’s first general election. Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi served nearly 16 years in office, but across two separate terms.
The milestone comes during a period in which the BJP has expanded its political presence across several regions of the country. Over the past decade, the Modi government has overseen a range of policy initiatives, including welfare programmes, infrastructure development projects, digital governance reforms and economic measures.
In a message reflecting on his years in office, Modi said the government’s focus had remained on development, public welfare and national progress.
“With the blessings of 1.4 billion fellow citizens and the spirit of nation first, we have spared no effort in empowering our youth, women, and our farmer brothers and sisters. It is the result of these tireless efforts that today, from infrastructure to the digital revolution, the country has gained a new identity on the global stage,” he said.
The occasion also drew congratulatory messages from several world leaders and diplomats, who highlighted India’s growing global profile and Modi’s long tenure in office.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim congratulated Modi on the milestone, describing it as a testament to years of public service and leadership. He also expressed hope for stronger cooperation between India and Malaysia in the future.
US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor praised Modi’s achievement, calling it a reflection of decades of public service.
Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said the milestone reflected the trust repeatedly placed in Modi by the people of India, while former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed highlighted India’s role in supporting development across the region.
Israel’s Ambassador to India Reuven Azar and Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape also extended their congratulations, while Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar praised India’s growing influence on global affairs.
The milestone adds another chapter to Modi’s political journey as he continues his third consecutive term as Prime Minister.
