WAVES 2025: Jaishankar Advocates Cultural Pluralism

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar delivered a powerful address at the WAVES 2025 Global Media Dialogue, highlighting the significance of cultural pluralism in shaping global change. Speaking on the second day of the event, Jaishankar stressed the importance of balancing technological advancements with the preservation of heritage and traditions in a rapidly changing world.

“The world is inherently diverse,” Jaishankar said, pointing out that colonialism and global power dynamics had historically suppressed this diversity. “As we look to the future, it is vital that every culture has a platform to express itself, and that we provide space for traditions to thrive alongside technological progress,” he added.

The minister discussed how the integration of technology and tradition could contribute to India’s vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047. He emphasised the need for modernity to not be seen as a rejection of the past but as an evolution built on human achievements. “Technology can empower future generations, helping them understand and connect with our rich heritage while driving innovation forward,” Jaishankar noted.

Jaishankar also underscored the role of digital connectivity and physical logistics in creating a global workforce. He highlighted that the digital era is reshaping industries and communication methods, bringing new opportunities for creativity and collaboration. “We are moving into an age where young talent must be prepared to navigate a world of surplus information and shifting mindsets,” he explained.

At the same time, Jaishankar acknowledged the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI), stressing the importance of reducing biases and ensuring ethical applications of emerging technologies. “AI is revolutionising many domains, but with these advancements come significant challenges, particularly in areas like intellectual property and content authenticity,” he warned.

WAVES 2025, India’s first international summit dedicated to the media and entertainment industries, brings together creators, policymakers, and technology experts from around the world. The four-day event, running from May 1 to May 4, aims to explore the intersection of media, creativity, and emerging technologies, positioning India as a key player in global creative industries.

Jaishankar’s address highlighted India’s role in shaping a more inclusive and democratic international system, one that celebrates pluralism while embracing technological progress. As the world grapples with new geopolitical realities, India’s focus on technology, culture, and tradition offers a blueprint for navigating the future.
