US President Donald Trump unleashed a sharp rebuke at Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday, accusing him of “conspiring against” America after Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un joined Xi at Beijing’s largest-ever military parade.
The parade, held to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Japan’s surrender in World War II, showcased China’s growing military might, including HQ-9C missile systems, tanks, and the latest advances in the People’s Liberation Army’s arsenal. For Beijing, the event was both a display of power and a stage for diplomacy, with Putin and Kim’s presence underlining deepening ties between Moscow, Pyongyang and Beijing.
But in Washington, Trump’s response was immediate and incendiary. Posting on Truth Social, the former president accused Xi of orchestrating a plot against the United States alongside Russia and North Korea.
“May President Xi and the wonderful people of China have a great and lasting day of celebration. Please give my warmest regards to Vladimir Putin, and Kim Jong Un, as you conspire against the United States of America,” Trump wrote.
He went further, calling out Xi for failing to acknowledge the role the US played in helping China during World War II. “The big question is whether President Xi will mention the massive support and ‘blood’ that the US gave to China to secure its freedom. Many Americans died in China’s quest for victory and glory. I hope they are rightfully honoured and remembered for their bravery and sacrifice,” he added.
Xi’s message of peace
Addressing the parade, Xi struck a markedly different tone. Declaring that the “rejuvenation of the Chinese nation is unstoppable,” he pledged that China would adhere to a path of peaceful development, even as it builds its military into a “world-class force” to safeguard sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“Humanity is again faced with a choice of peace or war, dialogue or confrontation,” Xi said. “The Chinese people will stand firmly on the right side of history and join hands with the rest of the world to build a community with a shared future.”
While his remarks stressed harmony and development, Xi urged the PLA to strengthen its capabilities as strategic support for national rejuvenation. He also called on nations to eliminate the root causes of war and treat each other as equals.
Trump softens tone later
Hours after his fiery social media post, Trump appeared to strike a more measured note during a meeting with Poland’s President at the White House. He described his personal relationship with Xi and other leaders as “very good” and admitted the parade was “beautiful” and “impressive.”
“I think we helped China very much when they talk about freedom, and I don’t believe the US was acknowledged,” Trump said. “But I understood the reason they were doing it: they were hoping I was watching, and I was watching.”
His remarks highlighted the paradox of US–China relations: deep strategic rivalry layered with personal diplomacy and sharp rhetoric. As Beijing parades its military power and courts allies like Russia and North Korea, Washington is left to balance condemnation with cautious engagement.
