The popular American late-night show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, has been suspended indefinitely following public backlash over controversial remarks made by its host regarding the fatal shooting of conservative activist and commentator Charlie Kirk. The decision, announced on Wednesday, reflects rising tensions over political discourse and media commentary in the United States.
The suspension was confirmed by Nexstar Media Group, which operates more than 200 ABC-affiliated local television stations across the country, reaching over 220 million viewers. “Nexstar strongly objects to recent comments made by Mr Kimmel concerning the killing of Charlie Kirk and will replace the show with other programming in our ABC-affiliated markets,” the company said in a statement. Andrew Alford, president of Nexstar’s broadcasting division, described Kimmel’s remarks as “offensive and insensitive at a critical time in our national political discourse” and noted that the comments did not reflect the values of local communities served by the network.
An ABC spokesperson confirmed the move, stating that Jimmy Kimmel Live! will be pre-empted indefinitely across its affiliated markets. The controversy stems from Kimmel’s Monday night monologue, during which he suggested that Tyler Robinson, the suspect in Kirk’s killing, could have been politically motivated as a pro-Trump Republican. “The MAGA Gang (is) desperately trying to characterise this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it,” Kimmel said.
The remarks drew swift condemnation from conservative political figures. Former President Donald Trump called the show’s suspension “great news for America,” criticising Kimmel’s talent and ratings while targeting other late-night hosts, including Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers, suggesting that their programmes should also be pulled from the air. Trump stated on his social media platform, Truth Social, “Congratulations to ABC for finally having the courage to do what had to be done. Kimmel has ZERO talent, and worse ratings than even Colbert, if that’s possible.”
The controversy also prompted regulatory scrutiny. FCC Chair Brendan Carr indicated that the agency might consider punitive action against Disney and ABC affiliates, including revoking licenses, if deemed necessary. However, FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez, the sole Democrat on the panel, criticised any use of government power to suppress lawful expression, warning against exploiting political violence to justify censorship.
The suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live! adds to ongoing debates in the U.S. over media responsibility, freedom of expression, and the politicisation of late-night entertainment. The show, a mainstay of American television since 2003, now faces an uncertain future as public and political pressures intensify in the aftermath of Kirk’s tragic death.
