Kashmiri Community Celebrates Herath in UK

The event combined religious rituals, cultural performances and community participation, reflecting efforts to sustain heritage within the UK diaspora…reports Asian Lite News

Members of the Kashmiri community from across the United Kingdom gathered in Reading for a celebration of Herath, the traditional Kashmiri observance of Maha Shivratri. The event, organised by the Kashmiri Pandit Association of Europe (KPAE), took place at the Reading Hindu Temple and brought together more than 170 attendees, alongside members of the wider local community.

Herath, observed by Kashmiri Pandits, marks the divine union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and holds particular cultural and spiritual significance in the Kashmir Valley. The Reading event featured traditional rituals associated with the festival, including the veneration of the Bhairavas, which forms an integral part of Herath observance in Kashmir. Sacred prayers, devotional singing and customary ceremonies were conducted by community elders.

Organisers said the gathering was designed not only as a religious occasion but also as a means of reinforcing cultural identity within the diaspora. Children and young people took part in the ceremonies, reflecting what organisers described as a strong intergenerational dimension to the festival. The participation of younger members of the community was presented as central to sustaining traditions that have been observed in the Valley for centuries.

A traditional Kashmiri meal was served during the event, prepared by community volunteers. The menu reflected customary Herath cuisine and was described by organisers as an expression of shared heritage. The preparation and serving of the meal formed a key part of the day’s programme, alongside the religious observances.

Representatives of KPAE thanked the Reading Hindu Temple Trust for hosting the celebration and supporting community initiatives. They emphasised the importance of maintaining cultural continuity and fostering a sense of belonging among members of the Kashmiri diaspora living in the UK.

Speaking at the event, Dr Sundeep Kaul, President of KPAE, said: “Herath is not only a religious festival but a celebration of our roots, resilience, and shared identity as Kashmiris. Events like this bring our community together and ensure that our traditions continue to thrive among future generations while contributing to the rich multicultural fabric of the UK.”

The Kashmiri Pandit Association of Europe describes itself as a community organisation dedicated to promoting the cultural, spiritual and social heritage of Kashmir among diaspora communities across the UK and Europe. Through cultural celebrations, educational initiatives and charitable activities, it aims to strengthen community bonds and encourage awareness of Kashmiri heritage across generations.

The celebration in Reading formed part of those wider efforts, providing a space for religious observance and social interaction. Attendees said the event offered an opportunity to reconnect with tradition while engaging with the broader local community.
