UDF Denies Internal Rift

Satheesan dismisses rift claims as UDF finalises 95 seats. LDF hits out, alleging internal discord in Congress ranks…reports Asian Lite News Desk

The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) in Kerala has dismissed reports of internal discord over seat-sharing, with senior leaders asserting that preparations for the 2026 Assembly elections are proceeding smoothly.

V. D. Satheesan, Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Assembly, on Friday rejected speculation of friction within the alliance, stating that seat allocation among UDF partners had been completed without any issues. “We have completed our seat division among our UDF partners without any problem,” he said, adding that the selection of candidates for 95 constituencies was finalised within 48 hours without complaints.

His remarks come amid ongoing political chatter around leadership and candidate selection in the run-up to the elections. However, Satheesan’s assertion aims to project unity within the opposition bloc as it prepares to take on the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF).

Meanwhile, M. V. Govindan, State Secretary of the CPI(M), launched a sharp attack on the Congress and the UDF, alleging that internal issues have weakened their electoral confidence. He argued that the opposition’s initial optimism has been undermined by challenges within its own ranks, particularly during the candidate selection process.

Govindan also referred to delays surrounding senior Congress leader K. Sudhakaran, suggesting that disagreements over his candidature reflect deeper divisions. According to him, these developments could further intensify the Congress party’s internal crisis.

Positioning the LDF as a stable alternative, Govindan emphasised the importance of continuity in governance. He said that a third consecutive term for the LDF is crucial for sustaining Kerala’s development trajectory and serving the people effectively. He added that the ruling alliance is confident of strengthening its position in the upcoming polls.

Amid the speculation, Sudhakaran himself moved to quell rumours of dissent. Speaking in Delhi, the Congress MP dismissed reports that he might contest as an independent candidate from Kannur. Reaffirming his loyalty, he said he remains committed to the party and will abide by its decisions.

“My stand is to continue within the party… I have no intention of challenging the party. The party is much bigger, and I am just a small part of it,” Sudhakaran said, underscoring his willingness to work within the organisation despite not being fielded as a candidate.

With the Election Commission of India schedule already announced, political activity in Kerala is intensifying. As both the UDF and LDF sharpen their strategies, the coming weeks are expected to see heightened campaigning and a clearer picture of voter sentiment across the state.
