Putin Vows Full Backing For Iran In Key Talks

Putin backs Iran with strong assurances in Saint Petersburg talks as Moscow signals deeper strategic alignment and renewed push for regional peace amid fragile diplomacy, reports Asian Lite Newsdesk

Russian President Vladimir Putin has reaffirmed Moscow’s backing for Iran, saying Russia will act in ways that serve Tehran’s interests, during talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi in Saint Petersburg on Monday.

According to Russian state media, Putin stressed that Moscow would continue efforts aimed at securing peace across the Middle East while aligning with the interests of Iran and regional populations. He said Russia would do “everything” necessary to help ensure stability is achieved as quickly as possible, underlining that Tehran was well aware of Moscow’s position.

During the meeting, Putin praised what he described as the resilience of the Iranian people, saying they were fighting “courageously and heroically” to defend their sovereignty. He expressed confidence that Iran would overcome its current challenges and that peace would eventually prevail. The Russian leader also reiterated Moscow’s willingness to deepen bilateral ties with Tehran amid ongoing regional tensions.

Araghchi, who is visiting Russia as part of a broader diplomatic push, conveyed greetings from Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian. He said Iran’s leadership valued its relationship with Russia, describing it as a “strategic partnership at the highest level” that would continue to develop regardless of external pressures.

The Iranian minister also thanked Russia for its support, stating that Iran had been able to withstand what he termed “US aggression” due to the determination of its people. His remarks come amid heightened geopolitical strains involving Iran, the United States, and regional actors in West Asia.

Araghchi arrived in Saint Petersburg earlier in the day, where he was received by Russian officials and Iran’s ambassador to Russia, Kazem Jalali. Iranian state media reported that the visit forms part of ongoing high-level consultations between Moscow and Tehran, reflecting their aligned positions on key regional and global issues.

Jalali noted that the two countries have maintained close communication since the escalation of tensions earlier this year, including multiple phone conversations between their presidents. The continued engagement signals a sustained effort by both sides to coordinate their diplomatic and strategic responses amid shifting geopolitical dynamics.

The visit follows Araghchi’s recent trip to Oman and comes against the backdrop of fragile diplomatic efforts involving Iran and the United States. A temporary ceasefire between the two sides began on April 8, raising hopes for a broader de-escalation. Subsequent talks held on April 11 and 12 aimed at resolving the conflict ultimately collapsed after nearly a full day of negotiations, highlighting the deep divisions that remain.
