Strong Earthquake Hits Afghanistan; Tremors Felt in Delhi

A powerful 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan, with tremors felt across Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir and other parts of North India on Saturday evening, reports Asian Lite News Desk

A strong earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale struck Afghanistan on Saturday evening, sending tremors across parts of North India, including Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir.

According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake occurred at 7.04 pm IST. The epicentre was located in Afghanistan at a depth of 215 kilometres, with coordinates of 36.442°N latitude and 70.672°E longitude.

In a post on X, the NCS said: “Earthquake of magnitude 6.2, June 27, 19:04:51 IST, Lat: 36.442 N, Long: 70.672 E, Depth: 215 Km, Location: Afghanistan.”

Residents in several parts of Delhi-NCR and Jammu and Kashmir reported feeling the tremors, although there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

Earthquakes originating in Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region are frequently felt across northern India and neighbouring countries because of their considerable magnitude and deep focal depth. Such deep earthquakes can transmit seismic waves over long distances, causing tremors across a wide geographical area.

The latest quake follows a series of seismic events in the region this year. In April, a magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck the Hindu Kush region, with tremors reported across Pakistan, including Islamabad, Peshawar, Swat, Hangu, North Waziristan and Chitral. According to Pakistan’s National Seismic Monitoring Centre, that earthquake occurred at a depth of 199 kilometres.

Another earthquake measuring 6.1 struck the same region in April, shaking Islamabad, parts of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan-occupied Gilgit-Baltistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Earlier, in February, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake was also felt across parts of Pakistan, while another quake centred in Afghanistan sent tremors through Delhi-NCR and several areas of North India.

Authorities in India and Afghanistan had not issued any reports of significant damage or casualties immediately after Saturday’s earthquake. Officials continue to monitor the situation, while residents in affected areas were advised to remain alert in the event of aftershocks.
