India sends 250 MT bridge aid to cyclone-hit Sri Lanka

India has delivered another consignment of Bailey Bridges weighing over 250 MT to Sri Lanka under its USD 450 million reconstruction package following Cyclone Ditwah….reports Asian Lite News Desk

India has handed over another consignment of Bailey Bridges weighing more than 250 metric tonnes to Sri Lanka as part of its USD 450 million reconstruction package following Cyclone Ditwah.

The bridges are expected to help restore vital transport links and reconnect communities affected by the cyclone, with Indian Army engineers set to install them at locations across the island.

The Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka said the latest consignment was handed over on August 8 as part of India’s reconstruction assistance to the country.

“Bridges that reconnect communities and rebuild lives. Another consignment of Bailey Bridges, weighing over 250 MT, has been handed over to Sri Lanka on 08 August 2026 as part of India’s USD 450 million reconstruction package in the wake of Cyclone Ditwah. Indian Army engineers will install them across the island, helping restore vital connectivity and strengthen infrastructure,” the High Commission said in a post on X.

The handover took place at an official ceremony attended by India’s Deputy High Commissioner Maitrey K and Sri Lanka’s Deputy Minister of Co-operative Development, Upali Samarasinghe.

Maitrey K formally transferred the infrastructure materials to Samarasinghe during the ceremony.

In a separate post, the Indian High Commission said the latest batch of Bailey Bridges would be installed across Sri Lanka by Indian Army engineers.

“The next set of Bailey Bridges, weighing over 250 MT, was handed over today by the Deputy High Commissioner @Maitrey_K to Hon. Upali Samarasinghe, Deputy Minister of Co-operative Development Sri Lanka. Part of India’s USD 450 million reconstruction package, these bridges will be installed across Sri Lanka by Indian Army engineers, restoring connectivity and supporting infrastructure development,” it said.

Bailey Bridges are prefabricated structures that can be rapidly assembled and deployed, making them particularly useful for restoring road connectivity where existing bridges have been damaged or destroyed.

The latest shipment forms part of India’s broader reconstruction assistance to Sri Lanka following Cyclone Ditwah. The package is aimed at supporting the rebuilding of critical infrastructure and helping communities recover from the impact of the disaster.

The deployment of Indian Army engineers alongside the bridge supplies is expected to speed up the restoration of transport links in affected areas. The bridges could also help address access problems for communities that remain isolated because of damage to existing infrastructure.

The assistance highlights the continuing development and infrastructure cooperation between India and Sri Lanka, with the two countries working on measures aimed at restoring essential services and strengthening long-term resilience.

The reconstruction programme is also expected to support Sri Lanka’s efforts to rebuild damaged infrastructure and improve connectivity in areas affected by the cyclone.

India’s latest assistance comes as Colombo continues its recovery efforts, with infrastructure restoration remaining a key priority following the disaster.
