South Korea Stands Firm on US-Japan Drills Despite North Korean Fury

Seoul says Freedom Edge exercise will proceed as planned despite Pyongyang’s renewed criticism…reports Asian Lite News Desk

South Korea on Tuesday said a planned trilateral military exercise with the United States and Japan will proceed as scheduled despite renewed criticism from North Korea, which accused Washington and its allies of escalating hostility towards Pyongyang.

The Freedom Edge exercise is scheduled to take place from September 7 to 11 in international waters east and south of South Korea’s southern island of Jeju.

A spokesperson for North Korea’s Foreign Ministry on Monday denounced the drills, warning that tensions on the Korean Peninsula could not ease as long as Washington continued what Pyongyang described as a hostile policy.

However, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said there were no plans to alter the exercise.

“This exercise is an annual defensive drill conducted by South Korea, the US and Japan to counter North Korean nuclear and missile threats, and safeguard regional peace and stability,” Joint Chiefs of Staff spokesperson Captain Jang Do-young told reporters.

“There are no changes to the schedule so far,” he added.

The three countries announced last week that they would hold the multidomain combined exercise, marking the fourth iteration of Freedom Edge.

The drills have become a key symbol of expanding security cooperation between Seoul, Washington and Tokyo following the trilateral leaders’ summit at Camp David in August 2023.

The initiative was seen as a major step towards institutionalising three-way security cooperation among the United States and its two key Asian allies.

North Korea has consistently condemned joint military exercises involving the US and South Korea as rehearsals for war.

Some analysts view Pyongyang’s latest criticism as an attempt to test whether US President Donald Trump could be persuaded to scale back Washington’s military commitments to Seoul in exchange for renewed dialogue with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

Seoul and Washington recently reduced the scale of their Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise after Trump ordered the Pentagon to significantly scale back the drills.

Despite the latest criticism from Pyongyang, Seoul’s military stressed that Freedom Edge would continue as planned, underscoring the three allies’ commitment to strengthening regional deterrence and security cooperation.
