Canada’s Foreign Minister Anita Anand will visit India this week for high-level talks with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, as Ottawa seeks to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties with New Delhi.
Anand will visit India and the United Arab Emirates from 13 to 16 October, Global Affairs Canada announced on Monday.
During her time in India, she will meet Jaishankar to discuss cooperation on priorities identified in the bilateral roadmap, including trade, energy, people-to-people ties, security and defence.
The meeting will be the 11th between the two foreign ministers since September 2025, highlighting continued diplomatic engagement between the countries.
Bilateral trade between Canada and India reached $30.4 billion in 2025, including $11 billion in goods, according to figures cited by the Canadian government.
The two countries have maintained diplomatic relations for nearly 80 years and share extensive people-to-people connections. The latest visit comes as both governments seek to expand cooperation amid changing global economic and security conditions.
In New Delhi, Anand will also attend the Bloomberg New Economy Forum, where she is scheduled to take part in a panel discussion on middle powers and the changing global order.
Global Affairs Canada said she would underline the importance of multilateral and plurilateral cooperation amid geopolitical uncertainty. She is also expected to highlight Canada’s role as a reliable partner for India and the wider Indo-Pacific region.
The planned discussions will cover economic and strategic priorities, with trade, energy and defence cooperation among the key areas of engagement.
Following her visit to India, Anand will travel to the UAE for talks with Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the country’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs.
The discussions are expected to focus on strengthening bilateral relations, expanding economic cooperation, improving security ties and promoting shared prosperity.
Anand will also meet senior government officials and business leaders to explore opportunities to develop commercial partnerships. According to the Canadian government, key areas for cooperation with the UAE include defence and security, artificial intelligence, innovation and people-to-people ties.
The UAE visit will build on commitments made during Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s visit to the country in November 2025. It was the first visit by a Canadian prime minister to the UAE in more than four decades.
That visit established a roadmap for closer cooperation in trade, investment, regional security and exchanges between the two countries.
Canada has described its relationship with the UAE as one of its fastest-growing partnerships in the Middle East. The two countries have maintained diplomatic relations for more than 50 years.
Anand’s visit to both countries reflects Canada’s efforts to deepen international partnerships and expand economic and strategic cooperation with key partners.
