World Sanskrit Conference unveils rare Indian dance text

The five-day event emanating academic and cultural excellence was inaugurated by the President of Nepal Ram Chandra Paudel.

The 19th World Sanskrit Conference took place vibrantly in Kathmandu recently receiving about 1500 attendees from across the continents. The event was enriched by presentations, panel discussions, perspectives, book releases and performances covering pedagogy, philosophy, law, spirituality, Buddhist and Jaina studies, history, art, manuscriptology, tantras, Indian traditional sciences, poetry, linguistics and much more.

The five-day event emanating academic and cultural excellence was inaugurated by the President of Nepal His Excellency Ram Chandra Paudel, joined by Culture and Tourism Minister of Nepal Badri Prasad Pandey, Vice Chancellor of Central Sanskrit University Prof. Shrinivasa Varakhedi, Prof. Dipti Sharma Tripathi-International Association of Sanskrit Studies, Chair of the Conference Secretariat Prof. Kashinath Nyaupane and spiritual leader H.H. Tridandi Chinna Jeeyar Swamiji, among other dignitaries.

Book Sangeetacandra palced for the scholars and learners

Uniquely, the conference had English translation of a rare title released as a joint publication of Central Sanskrit University and UK-based Sanskruti Centre for Cultural Excellence. Edited by Ragasudha Vinjamuri, Associate Lecturer at the University of Sunderland in London and translated by Dr. C Rajendran of Calicut University, the book Sangeetacandra is a 14th century Sanskrit text on dance attributed to Vipradasa. This is the first ever English translation in the world made available based on a single manuscript that would benefit several dance practitioners, teachers, researchers, historians, scholars and all enthusiasts of Sanskrit language.

Panel on Akshara Purushottama Darshanam

Cultural programme included delightful solo, duet and drama presentations on all evenings. One of the well-received sessions is the special panel on Akshara Purushottara Darshanam led by Swami Bhadreshdas Mahamohopadhyayaya where Vice-Chancellors of several Universities have participated.
