Taiwan’s official entry for the 98th Academy Awards, Left-Handed Girl, received an enthusiastic response at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2025, where it was screened to a packed audience ahead of its global Netflix release on November 28.
Directed, written and produced by Shih-Ching Tsou, with Sean Baker as co-writer, producer and editor, the film features compelling performances by Janel Tsai, Shih-Yuan Ma, Nina Ye, Brando Huang, Akio Chen and Xin-Yan Chao.
Set against the vibrant backdrop of Taipei’s bustling night markets, Left-Handed Girl unfolds a multi-generational narrative centred on three women from the same family. The story follows a single mother who moves to Taipei with her two daughters, starting a night market food stall to support the family. As they adapt to an unfamiliar city and a new way of life, the women confront financial strain, emotional upheavals and the everyday challenges of survival.
Despite their struggles, the film highlights how the three find resilience, belonging and renewed strength through their interdependence, capturing the tenderness and tension that define many migrant family experiences.
