Dr Malini Ranganathan made history in 2026 by being elected Municipal Councillor of Bouguenais 44340 (Loire-Atlantique & Nantes region) with an impressive 56.05% of the vote, becoming the first elected representative of Indian origin in the region of western France.
This landmark achievement reflects more than four decades of trust built through Malini’s leadership, cultural engagement, and unwavering commitment to community service.
Her exceptional contributions have been recognized at the highest levels in both India and France. She was conferred the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award (2019) by President of India and honoured as Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters (2024) by the French Government.

An internationally acclaimed Kathak exponent, Dr. Ranganathan has been based in France since 1983, dedicating over forty years to the transmission of Indian classical arts and intercultural dialogue. She is the Director of Bindi – Centre for Indian Arts & Culture, a leading institution promoting Indian heritage in France. She also serves as a jury member of the International Council of Dance (CID–UNESCO) and is an official curator of the Namaste France Festival, playing a pivotal role in fostering major cultural exchanges between India and France.
A PhD in Educational Sciences, specialised in didactic expertise and qualified Maître de conférences, Dr. Ranganathan is a distinguished teacher-researcher whose work bridges academia and performing arts. She is a pioneer in establishing a university-recognized pedagogical protocol for the teaching Transversal Intercultural studies in France, ensuring its legitimacy within higher education. Her academic influence is further reflected through several first-author publications in international peer-reviewed scientific journals, in both English and French.
As President of GIO France Nantes, Dr. Ranganathan has long been a unifying force within the community, promoting dialogue, inclusion, and cultural cohesion. Her electoral success marks a significant milestone not only for the Nantes region but also for the wider Indian diaspora in France, symbolising representation, perseverance, and the strength of intercultural integration.
