EAM Jaishankar meets European Parliament members, charts new India-EU ties, emphasises trade, technology, and supply chain resilience, while Parliamentary Friendship Group deepens diplomatic engagement, reports Asian Lite Newsdesk
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Monday met members of the European Parliament led by Angelika Niebler in Delhi, discussing the next phase of India-EU relations and growing convergence on trade, technology, and strategic cooperation.
Jaishankar expressed optimism about the European Parliament’s role in this evolving partnership. “Pleased to interact with Members of European Parliament, led by Angelika Niebler, here in Delhi. Discussed the new chapter in 🇮🇳🇪🇺 ties, and the growing convergence between us. As the agenda of cooperation expands, so too will the levels of comfort. Confident that the European Parliament will be a pillar of support in this new era,” he posted on X.
Earlier, the India-European Parliament Parliamentary Friendship Group convened its inaugural meeting at the Sansad Bhavan. Anurag Thakur, President of the group, underscored the importance of strengthening parliamentary diplomacy. “Grateful for the visionary guidance of Hon’ble PM Narendra Modi and Hon’ble Speaker Om Birla. Looking forward to leading more such meets as President of the group to strengthen India-EU ties. Together for a stronger partnership,” Thakur stated on X.
Jaishankar’s interactions come after his recent visit to Brussels, where he met EU leaders including Antonio Costa, Ursula von der Leyen, and Kaja Kallas. The discussions focused on advancing cooperation under the recently signed India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA), highlighting “enormous economic potential” and opportunities to enhance trade, technology, security, and connectivity.
The External Affairs Minister highlighted that finalising the FTA would mark a turning point in bilateral relations. He emphasised shared priorities such as de-risking supply chains, enhancing economic resilience, and fostering deeper business linkages to strengthen the strategic partnership.
