Director Semmalar Annam’s Tamil film Mayilaa has been nominated for the prestigious NETPAC Award at the 2026 International Film Festival of Rotterdam (IFFR), marking a significant milestone in its international journey. The film had its world premiere at the renowned festival earlier this month, where it drew warm appreciation from global audiences.
The NETPAC Award, presented by the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema, honours exceptional Asian films that demonstrate creativity, cultural depth and cinematic excellence. For Mayilaa, the nomination is not just recognition but affirmation of a story rooted in realism and emotional honesty.
The film offers an intimate portrayal of a young working woman navigating challenges while striving for dignity and independence. Its grounded storytelling and nuanced performances have resonated strongly with viewers and critics alike, positioning it as a notable voice in contemporary Tamil cinema.
Reacting to the nomination, director Semmalar Annam described it as a “meaningful recognition” for the entire team. “We made Mayilaa with deep care and honesty, and it is encouraging to see the film being acknowledged at IFFR,” she said.
Presented by acclaimed filmmaker Pa. Ranjith and produced by Newton Cinema, founded by Anto Chittilappally, Mayilaa reflects a collaborative creative vision. Chittilappally called the journey from world premiere to nomination “very rewarding” and said it was a proud moment for everyone associated with the project.
Pa. Ranjith praised the film as “socially rooted and emotionally sincere,” adding that such voices deserve international platforms.
The film stars P. Melody Dorcas in the lead role, supported by V. Shudar Kodi. Its technical team includes cinematographer Vinoth Janakiraman, editor A. Sreekar Prasad, composer Nandhan Kalaivanan, sound designer Anand Krishnamoorthi and sync sound recordist Amrith Shankar.
With further international screenings lined up in the coming months, Mayilaa continues to strengthen its global footprint, carrying a distinctly Tamil story to audiences worldwide.
