Secret Agent India Release

Wagner Moura, who plays the lead role, has been widely applauded for his powerful portrayal. The film earned four Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor, further cementing its position as one of the year’s standout international features

After an impressive run across global film festivals and major award ceremonies, Oscar-nominated film The Secret Agent is set to arrive in Indian cinemas on February 27. The Brazilian political drama, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Kleber Mendonça Filho, has drawn widespread praise for its gripping narrative, layered performances and atmospheric storytelling.

Set in Brazil in 1977 during a period of political unrest and fear, the film follows Marcelo, a technology expert attempting to escape a troubled past. Returning to his hometown of Recife in search of peace, he instead finds himself pulled into a tense world of surveillance, suspicion and moral dilemmas. As danger closes in, Marcelo must navigate complex choices in a society gripped by instability.

Wagner Moura, who plays the lead role, has been widely applauded for his powerful portrayal. The film earned four Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor, further cementing its position as one of the year’s standout international features.

Its festival journey has been equally remarkable. At Cannes, Kleber Mendonça Filho won the Best Director award, while Moura received the Best Actor honour. The film continued its winning streak at the Golden Globes, where Moura secured Best Actor in a Drama and the film took home the award for Best Foreign Language Film.

Speaking about his role, Moura described Marcelo as a deeply human character rather than a conventional hero. “Marcelo is not a conventional hero; he is a man trying to remain humane in a world that constantly tests him. The response to the film has been overwhelming, and I’m excited for Indian audiences to connect with its emotional and political resonance,” he said in a statement.

With its mix of political tension, emotional depth and international acclaim, The Secret Agent now looks to captivate Indian audiences as it brings its powerful story to theatres nationwide.
