Abdul El-Sayed makes history as first Muslim US Senator

Egyptian American Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has made history by becoming the first Muslim elected to the United States Senate after defeating Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan’s Senate race.

The former public health official and physician secured victory on Wednesday, marking a significant milestone in American political representation. His election also makes him the first Democratic doctor to enter the Senate since 1969.

Addressing supporters at his election headquarters in Detroit, El-Sayed expressed pride in his victory and thanked voters for their support.

“Michigan, we did it! I am so proud and honoured to stand here as your Senator-elect from the great state of Michigan,” he said.

El-Sayed, the son of Egyptian immigrants, had never previously held elected office. His victory marks a remarkable turnaround after suffering a double-digit defeat in Michigan’s Democratic gubernatorial primary in 2018.

His campaign also faced an unexpected setback shortly before polling, when Congresswoman Haley Stevens, whom he had defeated in the Democratic primary, announced her support for Republican candidate Rogers.

Despite the development, El-Sayed secured the Senate seat with a campaign focused on healthcare reform, political accountability and economic concerns affecting ordinary Americans.

Universal healthcare was among his central campaign promises. He criticised the country’s expensive, profit-driven healthcare system and argued that access to medical treatment should not leave families facing overwhelming bills.

“You deserve to be able to see a doctor without getting a huge bill,” he told Michigan voters on the eve of the election.

He also pledged to reduce the influence of outside money in politics and address the economic challenges confronting working families. His campaign included criticism of Israel, according to several reports.

Born and raised in southeast Michigan, El-Sayed attended public schools and grew up in a family with Egyptian and long-established Michigan roots. His father, Mohamed, immigrated from Egypt, while his stepmother, Jackie, comes from a family that has lived in Gratiot County since the 1800s.

He graduated from the University of Michigan, where he played for the Wolverines men’s lacrosse team. He subsequently earned a medical degree from Columbia University through a National Institutes of Health-funded fellowship.

El-Sayed also completed a second doctorate at the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, establishing an academic background spanning medicine and public health.

He lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan, with his wife, Sarah, and their two daughters, Emmalee and Serene.

His election represents a landmark moment for Muslim Americans and adds a new dimension to the representation of immigrant communities in the US Senate.
