Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan’s sister Uzma Khan has filed a second contempt of court petition in the Supreme Court, alleging authorities have failed to implement orders allowing the jailed opposition leader to communicate with his family.
The petition, filed on Wednesday, names Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, senior prison officials and government authorities as respondents, according to Pakistani media reports.
Uzma Khan alleged that the Supreme Court’s August 18 order allowing Imran Khan to meet his sisters weekly and speak virtually with his sons had not been implemented.
She said Khan’s sisters were again denied permission to meet him at Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail on Tuesday, while he had not spoken to his sons, Kasim and Sulaiman Khan, since March.
The petition further alleged that authorities had failed to arrange twice-weekly telephone conversations between Khan and his sons, despite the court’s directions.
Uzma Khan asked the Supreme Court to intervene and ensure the implementation of its August 18 order, particularly regarding family meetings and communication.
The latest petition follows an earlier contempt case over the alleged failure to comply with the same court order, which had also directed authorities to transfer Khan to Shifa International Hospital for examination and treatment by a multidisciplinary medical board.
However, authorities instead took Khan to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences on August 21 before returning him to Adiala Jail after doctors declared him medically fit.
The dispute intensified after Khan’s three sisters reportedly waited outside Adiala Jail for several hours on Tuesday but were not allowed to meet him. Family members of Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, were also reportedly denied permission to visit her.
Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party condemned the restrictions, describing them as a serious violation of orders issued by the Supreme Court and Islamabad High Court.
The party said the repeated denial of family meetings raised questions over compliance with judicial directives and urged prison authorities to allow Khan and Bushra Bibi to meet their relatives in accordance with the law.
Khan has been in prison since August 2023 following convictions that his party says are politically motivated. He has faced multiple legal cases since his removal as prime minister through a no-confidence vote in 2022.
The new contempt petition adds to mounting legal pressure over the treatment and conditions of the former prime minister in custody.
