High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi and Bangladesh defence adviser discuss expanding military engagement…reports Asian Lite News Desk
India and Bangladesh on Wednesday held talks on strengthening defence cooperation and expanding engagement between their armed forces, amid efforts to deepen bilateral ties.
The discussions took place between India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi and Bangladesh’s Advisor to the Prime Minister for the Ministry of Defence and Armed Forces Division, A.K.M. Shamsul Islam.
The two sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and advancing cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
“The discussions underlined the strong bond existing between the Armed Forces of the two countries,” the Indian High Commission in Dhaka said in a post on X.
The meeting covered a wide range of issues aimed at enhancing defence-related engagement, with both sides expressing their commitment to further strengthen ties and cooperate in mutually beneficial areas.
The talks came a day after Trivedi met Bangladesh President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at Bangabhaban and discussed ways to deepen bilateral relations.
During the meeting, Trivedi conveyed warm greetings to the President and wished him success in his continued service to the people of Bangladesh.
The Indian mission said the discussion highlighted the longstanding ties between the two countries, built on shared history, cultural links and strong people-to-people relations.
Alamgir said Bangladesh attaches significant importance to its relationship with India, describing the country as Bangladesh’s closest neighbour and an important partner in trade and development.
He expressed Dhaka’s willingness to build a respectful, forward-looking and mutually beneficial partnership with New Delhi based on sovereign equality, national interests, dignity and the welfare of the people, according to Bangladeshi media outlet UNB.
The President also said there was considerable scope to expand cooperation in areas including trade, water management, technology, connectivity, culture and people-to-people relations.
Trivedi also met Bangladesh’s Minister of Shipping, Railways, Road Transport and Bridges, Shaikh Rabiul Alam, on Tuesday. The two sides discussed strengthening connectivity between the neighbouring countries and reviewed areas of mutual interest, including railways, shipping and bilateral development projects.
